In terms of sales, Madden NFL is always a blockbuster when it's released every year in August, before the start of the NFL season. Since its first iteration in 1988, the game has sold over 99 million copies.[5] One of the reasons it has sold so well is because it is available on so many systems. Madden NFL 2008 was available on an astonishing 11 different platforms: all sixth (3) and seventh generation systems (5), PC, Mac OS X, and mobile phones.

Due to football being popular primarily in the United States, the game sells exceptionally well in that region. The franchise occupies four of the top 10 best selling games in the U.S.[1]
