In terms of sales, Madden NFL is always a blockbuster when it's released every year in August, before the start of the NFL season. Since its first iteration in 1988, the game has sold over 99 million copies.[5] One of the reasons it has sold so well is because it is available on so many systems. Madden NFL 2008 was available on an astonishing 11 different platforms: all sixth (3) and seventh generation systems (5), PC, Mac OS X, and mobile phones.

Due to football being popular primarily in the United States, the game sells exceptionally well in that region. The franchise occupies four of the top 10 best selling games in the U.S.[1]

Madden NFL 2005 is the tenth best-selling video game of all-time in the United States with 6.1 million copies sold, according to the NPD sales figures.

Madden NFL 2006 is the fifth best-selling video game of all-time in the United States with 6.7 million copies sold, according to the NPD sales figures.

Madden NFL 2007

Madden NFL 2007 is the third best-selling video game of all-time in the United States with 7.7 million copies sold, according to the NPD sales figures.

In December 2006, all versions of Madden NFL 07 combined sold 1.9 million units, making it the best-selling title that month in the United States. Overall in 2006, the PlayStation 2 version of Madden NFL 07 sold 2.8 million units, making it the best-selling video game that year in the US, while the Xbox 360 version sold 1.1 million units in the US.

Madden NFL 2008

Madden NFL 2008 is the seventh best-selling video game of all-time in the United States with 6.6 million copies sold, according to the NPD sales figures. As of December 13, 2007, the Xbox 360 version has sold over 1 million copies in the United States.

Madden NFL 2009

Madden NFL 2009 was released on August 12, 2008 and sold more than 2.3 million copies in its first month across all systems, 2.2 million in the USA (Xbox 360: 1 million, PlayStation 3: 643,000, PlayStation 2: 424,500, Nintendo Wii: 115,800).[6] It has sold 1.87 million on the Xbox 360 as of January 1, 2009. In the third quarter of 2008, it was the best selling videogame worldwide with 2,994,000 sold units, 2,958,000 in the USA, 35,000 in the UK and 1,000 in Japan.[7]

Madden NFL 10

HOOD TOWN PITTSBURGH Until the end of September 2010, Madden NFL 10 shipped 3.9 million units globally.[8] In the list of the best selling games of 2009 in the USA, excluding December, Madden NFL 10 for the Xbox 360 took the ninth spot with 1.5 million sold units.[9]

Madden NFL 11

Madden NFL 11 sold 1.9 million units in the first week after its release.[2] During August 2010, it sold 1,814,400 units in the USA, 920,800 for the Xbox 360 and 893,600 for the PlayStation 3.[10]

Madden NFL 13

Madden NFL 13 sold 900,000 units on the first day[11] and 1.6 million in the first week[4] which is an increase by 7%[11] respectively 8%[4] compared to Madden NFL 12. During November 2012 it sold about 760.000 units [12]
