April 2008 NPD sales data results. Coverage: April 6 to May 3 (data released May 15)

April saw the release of two much-anticipated blockbuster releases in Grand Theft Auto IV for the PS3/Xbox 360 and Mario Kart Wii for Nintendo's system. Although only available for 5 days for April's NPD, GTA4 recorded sales of 1.8 million for Xbox 360 and 1.0 million for the PS3 for a total of 2.8 million units and a 1.8:1 ratio in favor of the Xbox 360. Mario Kart Wii came split the two versions by coming in at #2 with 1.12 units sold.

714K for the Wii is the largest 4-week month (excluding holiday months, November and December) in the video game industry. March 2008 sales of 721K was 5 weeks. The previous record was NPD June 2002 when the PS2 sold 690,000 following a price cut to $199. [1] It's unusual for three games to exceed the 1-million mark in a nonholiday month, which just goes to prove that great content can succeed regardless of when it is launched," NPD's Anita Frazier said.[2] On the hardware side, not even GTAIV could boost sales for the PS3 and Xbox 360. As for a hardware bump from GTAIV, Frazier said it might arrive in NPD May 2008's figures because the game was released so late in the April reporting period.

This is the first month in many that we've seen a decrease in portable hardware and software sales," Frazier said, "but it's important to remember that this year, the Easter Holiday fell in March as compared to April in 2007."

Coverage: April 6 - May 3. A 4-week month, as opposed to March's five weeks.
